Hand made Czech crystal

Every piece in our collection is made entirely by hand, by craftsmen who trace their crystal working ancestry back through generations, often in the same villages where they now live and work. Designed, blown, turned, cut and polished by artisans, whether in leather aprons or running shoes and shorts, a continuing legacy reflected in the glare of the kiln. Suppressed in 1938 by the Nazis and again in '48 by the communists, the skills somehow survived and flourished---there must be something in the Czech character that relates especially to fine crystal.

Perhaps, no other country in the world can point to as long a tradition of craft as the Czech Republic. Extensive regions within Bohemia and Moravia continue to remain centers of Czech production and manufacture. From the earliest days, Czech design and manufacture set the tone in Europe and the world.

The oldest discovery of beads within the Czech Republic dates from the early bronze age, when this territory was populated by Celts who knew the technology of beadmaking and enamel. Archeological testimony confirms that beads were very popular in those times and apparently, Benedictine monasteries were engaged in the manufacture as well. The range of medieval product was surprisingly rich and includes graceful transparent vessels decorated with beads. The spectacular mosaic "Day of Judgment," which adorns the golden gate of St.Vitus’s Cathedral in Prague, confirms the extreme delicacy and craftsmanship of medieval Czech craft.
