OUR FRIENDS AND PERSONAL INTERESTS

Jim Freeman: www.praguewriter.com is Jim's personal page with all his writing - travel stories, novel excerpts, exstensive poetry, political rants, columns ...all!

Misha Molova: Misha is hoping to get her own site done soon, but for now, you can look at least at the pictures of what she's participating in. www.pomocnetlapky.cz is the site of Helping Paws, the first Czech organization training assistance dogs for the disabled. There is an English version of the site.

Charlotte Freeman: www.mindspring.com/~charlottemf/index.html links to Jim's daughter Charlotte's first novel Place Last Seen, published by Picador. Jim Fergus, author of One Thousand White Women and The Sporting Road says, "Charlotte McGuinn Freeman is an exceptionally gifted writer, to the point that it's almost impossible to believe that Place Last Seen is a 'first' novel."Order Place Last Seen

Ken Nash: www.nashken.com an entry to the weird and wonderful world of the cartoons and sketchbooks of a primo satiric mind. Someone's going to pick these up in syndication---maybe New Yorker will replace some of the stupid and mundane strips that it gives such press to.www.rudemountain.com another Ken Nash creation with Morgan Sowden, free online greeting cards, the Microsoft of bad behavior and decorum. Tell people what you really think about them!

Morgan Sowden: Check out what's goin' on in Morgan's life and look into the incredibly talented industrial design firm he represents at: Sowden Design Industrial Design.

www.damer.com the homepage of Bruce Damer, who does things in the computer-futures world that are beyond the ken of ordinary mortals. Avatars (whatever they are), virtual worlds, artificial intelligence (a particularly intriguing thought in this day and age). He and Galen Brandt also have a computer museum, see www.digibarn.com. Eclecticism taken to the nth degree---check it out.

www.theonion.com the website for satire at its best and a bundle of current event mis-information in that genre.

PRAGUE AND THE CZECH REPUBLIC

all following sites are in English!!!

www.fortheloveofprague.com the homepage of Gene Deitch, animator of world class talent who somehow hung out in the Czech Republic for thirty years through the Communist times, doing his stuff for Hollywood. Gene is the formost expert on Prague and the Czech Republic. His book of personal remembrances "For the Love of Prague" is a must read and you can order it here. But beyond that, his is the essential site for information about Prague, listing every conceivable point of interest for the tourist or expat resident.

www.pis.cz is the Prague Information Service - the official one! This link will lead you to their English language section (several other languages available too!)- perfect source of information on Prague and it' history, current cultural events, hotels and all tourist attractions.

If you would like to come to Prague and visit the Prague Spring Music Festival or hear your favorite rock star while here, the place to go to is Ticketpro.cz www.ticketpro.cz where you can securely buy your ticket on-line in advance. They seem to have everything from big theatres to rock clubs to Dalai Lama's lectures.

You arrive in Prague and then what - how do you get to your uncle's little village? Find out on the National Timetable System www.jizdnirady.cz which includes the wide network of both buses and trains. All of them remarkably reliable and cheap. Trains might have delays though, so allow at least an hour for transfer. I use this site all the time, it's actually easier then getting to the station and try to figure it out! Type in the first possible date and time of your departure and watch the options unfurl.

To stay on top of the Prague news, visit The Prague Post www.praguepost.cz, or subscribe to it, they'll send it anywhere. All expats keep complaining about it, but hey, it's the only one we have! Our friend Theo is the managing editor now and the paper has gotten much better under his leadership. When you get to Prague, buying a copy is a must - they have the most useful and comprehensive culture listings as well as the "how to survive" tourist info.

Would you like to send flowers to somebody you know over here or in Poland? Even that can be done nowadays! Dial up Bohemia Flowers www.flowers.cz and order a bouquet over the Net. A good friend of ours, Eva, is working for them, so we know they are for real!

Looking for a contact? Try the Czech version of Yellow Pages (ours are called Golden Pages, phew!) www.zlatestranky.cz which is a terrible site, but there is no better one yet. Trying to locate a person is an impossible job, since the phone nubmers stay with the flat - when person moves, the trail is lost. The phonebook also shows the phone under landlord's (!) name, not tennant's. We wish you good luck!

Looking for your roots? Ancestors, relatives long lost? Try P.A.T.H. Finders Int'l. - personal ancestral tours & history. They are the guys who seem to have the patience to read the old records and then take you to the village where your grandgrandgrandmother was born. More info at: www.pathfinders.cz

Finally - search on your own! This is the last restort, but hey, worth a try. These are our 4 favorite Czech portals: Redbox: www.redbox.cz, Volny: www.volny.cz, Seznam: www.seznam.cz and Atlas: www.atlas.cz. Plus a personal tip: if you get here and your computer only knows AOL, go to a cyber cafe and sign up for a free e-mail address with one of these search engines - you will receive all the codes necessary to actually access the Internet (in other words, you will be dialing a local number directly into the server without having to install any software etc.)
